Australia

"The trees retained their leaves, and shed their bark instead, the swans were black, the eagles white, the bees were stingless, some mammals had pockets, others laid eggs, it was warmest on the hills and coolest in the valleys, even the blackberries were red."

Jervis Bay

At the weekend we went on a road trip south to Jervis Bay, and another collection of fantastic beaches. It was lovely to be exploring, as it sometimes feels there is so much to see here, and so little time.

Hyams beach has the whitest sand in the world, its almost like snow. As you can imagine Carys and Evan were more interested in getting wet and dirty than the colour of the sand. Having got bored of standard seaweed faces, we have progressed to seaweed monsters.

Over the far side of the bay was Perpendicular Point where there are 90 metre vertical cliffs around the headland, that the Navy use for target practice. Apparently its full of unexploded incendiaries, and of course tourists visiting the lighthouse! We were able to enjoy a picnic without Evan toppling over the cliff or blowing anything up, but our suspension didn't survive the dirt road home. We managed to pack in a few more beaches, including Bristol Point, but it didn't remind us of home much. Too much white sand, not enough terrace housing, and the
dolphins didn't sound right

On the way back we drove through Kangaroo Valley to see some wombats(!). It is one of only 7 completely enclosed valleys in the world, and it was impressive with its subtropical vegetation. We only managed to see dead wombats, so we'll have to go back.

The Fitzroy Falls were impressive at 81 Carys' tall, but nothing to rival the tea room where we had the best cake we've eaten here. Quality and quantity were excellent, we just had to loosen our belts for the journey home.

Highlights of the week

Evan trying to take his socks off while standing up (he fell over).

Bron washing her face with exfoliating face-wash, getting some in her eye, and having to go to casualty to have it removed.

Howard running home from work (he's been limping since).

Carys swimming doggy paddle (she hasn't learnt to breath and swim at the same time yet, so is a bit limited).

Meeting up with Sham and Lisa, and their gorgeous munchkin Penelope. They have finally arrived in Sydney for 6 months, or a long holiday if Sham can't sort out his work visa.

The coldest temp in Sydney for 60 years (3.2 degrees!).
