Australia

"The trees retained their leaves, and shed their bark instead, the swans were black, the eagles white, the bees were stingless, some mammals had pockets, others laid eggs, it was warmest on the hills and coolest in the valleys, even the blackberries were red."

Evan's first birthday

Hooray, Evan is one, we survived the first year!

Its been amazing travelling around with a blue eyed boy. Women all over coo and drool over him, especially if they are from the Far East. Strangers take his photo, and ask how old he is. He's still at that age where he has a big smile and a wave for most people. What a pity that this easy charm may not last. Its not nice to think of your beautiful baby as a spotty greasy teenager with the social skills of a crocodile, but it may happen.

We managed to rustle together a few other one year olds from the mother's group we have gatecrashed. They were amazing, coming round with food and pressies, even people we hadn't met before. The party was more for Carys' benefit. She kindly offered to open any gifts, and test any toys. Having said that she is pretty good at singing happy birthday. Evan was quite happy to sit back and observe, although he wasn't taking a back seat when the cake came out.
